Lancers and Quadrilles

It is said that Lancers originated in Paris in 1840s by a French Dancing Master. However, there is documentation which shows that it appeared in England as early as 1817. The Quadrilles and Lancers usually had five figures.. Lancers were introduced to London society in 1840. They became immediately the dance of both the high society and the common people. Within a few months they crossed the Atlantic to the United States and they swept the country.

Dance Manuals of the 1850s gave them the name “Lancers Quadrilles.” Their introduction created a new taste for quadrilles. The spelling can be “Lancer or Lancier” both of which are correct.
